An unidentified group set fire to a passenger train in the Bangladeshi capital on Tuesday, resulting in at least four deaths, including a woman and her young son. This incident occurred amid political unrest surrounding the January 7 elections.
The attack coincided with a nationwide stoppage called by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) as part of its ongoing campaign to boycott the polls and protest against the Election Commission’s schedule.
This arson attack on the train is the fifth in the past month and the deadliest in terms of casualties. Miscreants set fire to three compartments of the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express early morning after it left the Airport Railway Station at the capital’s entry point.
The train was stopped at Tejgaon station after passengers noticed the fire. At least four individuals, including a woman and her child, died in the incident, and another minor boy was reported missing.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Awami League is the main contender in the absence of the BNP, which boycotted the January 7 polls. The BNP demands a non-party caretaker government for voting oversight, a condition not met by the ruling party.
Political unrest has escalated, with numerous incidents such as the uprooting of railway tracks last week and the killing of a passenger. Dozens of vehicles have been torched since late October, and at least six people have died in the violence.
The Election Commission announced the polls schedule on November 15, and the BNP, citing unfair conditions under the ruling Awami League, has called for the government’s resignation and the formation of an interim neutral government.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal highlighted differences of opinion among political leaders regarding the election process. Despite invitations for dialogue, some political parties declined, and tensions persist.
Over 10,000 opposition leaders and activists, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have been arrested in a nationwide crackdown, according to media reports. The BNP claims the figure is higher, with up to 20,000 arrests. A court on Monday denied bail to Alamgir, a key BNP leader.
