NEW DELHI: The country’s largest helicopter manufacturing facility at Tumakuru in Karnataka, which will initially produce around 30 light choppers per year, will be dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.
The greenfield helicopter factory of defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has been planned to become “a one-stop solution” for all helicopter requirements of the country, the defence ministry said on Saturday.
The factory, the foundation stone for which was laid by the PM Modi in 2016, will initially produce the indigenous three-tonne class light utility helicopter (LUH), which is now ready after being flight-tested extensively.
The factory will also be augmented to produce the light combat helicopters (LCHs) and Indian multi-role helicopters (IMRHs). It will also be used for MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) of LCHs, LUHs, IMRHs and civilian advanced light helicopters (ALHs) in the future.
“The factory will also cater for potential exports of civilian LUHs in the future. Overall, HAL plans to produce more than 1,000 helicopters in the range of 3-15 tonnes, with a total business of over Rs 4 lakh crore over a period of 20 years,” the official said.
The factory’s proximity with the existing HAL facilities in Bengaluru will boost aerospace manufacturing ecosystem in the region as well as support skill infrastructure development such as schools, colleges and residential areas.
