NEW DELHI: Indian Navy‘s INS Visakhapatnam, which is on a mission in the Gulf of Aden to combat piracy, recently responded to a distress call from a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel.
The vessel, named MV Genco Picardy, issued the distress call late on Wednesday. Thankfully, there were no casualties reported among the 22 crew members, 9 of whom are Indian nationals. The fire on board the vessel was also brought under control.
In the early hours of January 18, Indian Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded MV Genco Picardy to assess the extent of the damage caused by the drone attack. After conducting a thorough inspection, the EOD specialists declared the area safe for further transit. As a result, the vessel is now proceeding to its next port of call.
