NEW DELHI: In a bizarre turn of events, a black pigeon suspected of espionage was released after spending eight months in captivity at a veterinary hospital in Mumbai. The pigeon, initially detained due to its mysterious cursive messages in ancient Chinese and a sensitive microchip on its legs, turned out to be innocent of any spying activities.
Ravindra Patil, the assistant Mumbai police sub-inspector on the case, sought assistance from a veterinary hospital to house the unusual captive.Dr Mayur Dangar, the manager of the hospital, mentioned, “The police never came to check the pigeon,” as reported by NYT.
The bird’s suspicious appearance at a port where international vessels dock triggered the investigation. The Central Industrial Security Force guards discovered the pigeon with rings on its legs, including one with a chip. Concerned about potential foreign espionage, the guards informed the police.
The forensic examination of the chip revealed details about the pigeon’s origin and location coding, leading Patil to conclude that it was a racing bird from Taiwan. Despite the investigation confirming the bird’s innocence, it remained in captivity for eight months.
