HYDERABAD: Three people died and seven others suffered injuries when firecrackers set off by BRS workers at a public event in Khammam on Wednesday led to a gas cylinder explosion. Senior police officers said that although the injured were out of danger, at least four of them may have a leg amputated.
The accident took place at 11.40am at Cheemalapadu village, in Khammam’s Karepally mandal, where BRS had organised an “Athmeeya Sammelan” for party workers and supporters. The village is part of Wyra assembly constituency.
The firecrackers were lit just as BRS Khammam MP Nama Nageshwara Rao and Wyra MLA Ramulu Naik were invited to the stage, set up opposite an anganwadi centre. Police officers said some of the crackers landed on a hut about 250 metres away, which immediately caught fire. The hut belonged to alabourer, who was not at home at the time. BRS supporters and police personnel extinguished the fire with water.
The BRS supporters spotted a gas cylinder in the hut and brought it out to avoid an accident but it suddenly exploded, sending portions of it flying hundreds of metres away to near the event stage.
BRS supporters, a police head constable and two local reporters standing near the hut were injured as shrapnel from the explosion severed their limbs. Photos taken immediately after the explosion showed men lying on the floor covered in blood and writhing in pain.
The injured were rushed to Khammam government hospital where Bhanoth Ramesh (40) and Ajmera Mangu (45) of Cheemalapadu died while being treated. Both were agricultural labourers. A third person, BRS supporter Laxman (60), also died late Wednesday evening after his leg was amputated.
