GUWAHATI: The MPs had to grapple and scuffle with the two youths inside Parliament for about 20 minutes until security personnel came in and caught the duo, deputy leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said, recounting his first-hand experience of the massive security breach on Wednesday.
Speaking to TOI from New Delhi, the Lok Sabha MPfrom Kaliabor (Assam) asked the government what did it do to enhance the security of the new Parliament building on which it spent crores.Gogoi sought an answer from Union home minister Amit Shah.
“Risking their lives, the MPs tried to go near the youths in a bid to catch them to foil the attack. No police, security, commando or rapid response force personnel could be seen immediately after the incident. For 20 to 25 minutes, the MPs were trying to stop the two youths. Some other MPs started shouting after they saw the two persons holding cans which were emanating yellowish smoke. Our first concern was whether the smoke was poisonous,” Gogoi said.
He said the occurrence of the incident on the very day that the Parliament was attacked 22 years ago came as a rude shock to them.
Lok Sabha MP from Assam, Dilip Saikia, sustained injuries in his hand while trying to control the youths inside Parliament.
Gogoi further said there was no one to take the MPs suffering from asthma or heart ailments out of the Parliament building. “Only God saved us. Thankfully they did not have weapons with them,” he said, demanding a thorough probe into the alleged involvement of the MP who helped the duo enter the visitors’ gallery.
Pradyut Bordoloi, another Congress MP from the state was inside the Lok Sabha participating in the zero hour discussion when he heard the commotion and someone say “gir gaya” (someone fell down from balcony). “I saw a youth in front of me. He jumped onto the sitting arena of the members and was running here and there. The other youth fell down next,” Bordoloi said, adding that Congress MP from Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla was among the first to nab one of the youths.
“It felt like tear gas shells were thrown inside the Parliament. A strong smell overpowered our senses,” Bordoloi said, adding that the two youths were pushed to a corner and were finally caught.
He said this serious breach of security could have proven to be deadlier than the previous one when the attackers could at least not enter the Parliament building. “All of them, including the protesters outside, were working in unison. It was some kind of coordinated action,” he said, expressing surprise at how canisters went undetected in metal detectors.
