JAMMU: A day after two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were injured when Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire along the international border in Jammu’s Arnia sector, BSF in an official statement on Wednesday confirmed the cross-border fire exchange and injuries to the personnel, adding that Tuesday night’s breach of truce was the first such violation since the fresh ceasefire agreement came into effect on February 24, 2021, in which security personnel sustained injuries.
Earlier on September 6, 2022, Pakistan had resorted to unprovoked firing on forward Indian posts along the international border, also in Arnia sector, breaking an 18-month peace agreement between both countries. None was, however, hurt in the exchange of fire.
“Around 8.15pm Tuesday, Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing towards BSF troops which was befittingly retaliated. Two BSF personnel who received bullet injuries were immediately evacuated from their post by their colleagues and admitted to Jammu GMCH,” PRO BSF said on Wednesday. The injured personnel — Alok Saha (44) and Surajeet Biswas (35), both residents of West Bengal and posted with BSF’s 120Bn in RS Pura — were said to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, scores of villagers assembled at the Arnia border belt on Wednesday, raised anti-Pakistan slogans and burnt an effigy of Pakistan in protest against the breach of truce. “They have deceived us again by resorting to unprovoked firing, resulting in injuries to two BSF jawans. This cannot be tolerated,” a villager told reporters during the protest.
