India has once again missed the Oscars bus as the Malayalam film 2018: Everyone Is A Hero starring Tovino Thomas and Kunchacko Boban, has failed to make it to the shortlisted films in the International Feature Film category for the 96th Academy Awards.
The Malayalam film was selected to represent India as the country’s official entry at the 96th Academy Awards, by the Film Federation of India.But it could not make it to the final nomination list by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The list of films that were announced had films from Ukraine, Germany and United Kingdom. Only 15 films have advanced to next round of international feature film category. A member of the Academy said that the list has been announced but unfortunately India does not feature in it.
Last year, Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film Chhello Show was shortlisted but it had failed to bag a nomination for Oscar 2023. The last film that was officially nominated from India and made it to the top five was Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan in 2001.

Meanwhile, 15 films will advance to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category for the 96th Academy Awards. Films from 88 countries and regions were eligible in the category.
Academy members from all branches were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must have met a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.
In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:
Armenia, “Amerikatsi”
Bhutan, “The Monk and the Gun”
Denmark, “The Promised Land”
Finland, “Fallen Leaves”
France, “The Taste of Things”
Germany, “The Teachers’ Lounge”
Iceland, “Godland”
Italy, “Io Capitano”
Japan, “Perfect Days”
Mexico, “Totem”
Morocco, “The Mother of All Lies”
Spain, “Society of the Snow”
Tunisia, “Four Daughters”
Ukraine, “20 Days in Mariupol”
United Kingdom, “The Zone of Interest”
Final nominations in all categories will be announced on January 23. The 96th Oscars, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be held on March 10, broadcasting live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The show will begin one hour earlier than usual, at 7 p.m. ET.
