SRINAGAR: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday said it has seized three vehicles used by terrorists for subversive activities in Kashmir Valley.
An NIA spokesperson said all three vehicles — a Hyundai i20, a Maruti 800, and a Hyundai i20 Sportz — were seized on February 15 under section 25(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, as proceeds of terror in the case pertaining to the arrest of former DSP of J&K Police, Devender Singh, in January 2020. Investigations revealed that the cars were being used to further terrorism in the Valley.
Singh was arrested on January 11, 2020, along with self-styled commander of the proscribed Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit, Syed Naveed Mushtaq alias Naveed Babu; the group’s alleged overground worker Irfan Shafi Mir; and alleged accomplice Rafi Ahmad Rather, while they were travelling from Kashmir to Jammu in the Hyundai i20 that was intercepted at a checkpost on the Srinagar-Jammu highway near Mir Bazar Police Post in Kulgam.
During a subsequent search, an AK-47 rifle, three pistols, one hand grenade, ammunition and other incriminating materials were recovered from the vehicle. A case in this regard was initially registered at Qazigund police station the same day, and re-registered by the NIA on January 17, 2020, said the statement.
In a 3,064-page chargesheet filed before a special NIA court in July 2020, the agency accused Singh of waging “war against India” with the help of Pakistan-based terrorists and members of the country’s high commission in Delhi. Besides providing support to Hizbul Mujahideen, the former cop was also tasked by his Pakistani handler with establishing a “contact” in the Ministry of External Affairs for carrying out espionage activities.
Further probe was in progress, the spokesperson added.
