NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha that the security vaccuum in Jharkhand, which had witnessed an all-time-high of 742 incidents of Left-wing extremist violence in 2009, “has been almost filled” with hitherto Naxal strongholds like Burha Pahar, tri-junction of West Singhbhum, Sarikela-Kharsawan, Khunti and Parasnath Hills “freed from Maoist presence” through establishment of camps and sustained operations by the security forces.
“Naxal violence in India has decreased by 77% over the past 12 years and the number of deaths in related incidents has also reduced by 90% during the same period,” MoS Nityanand Rai stated in reply to a question. Talking particularly of the “considerable improvement in security situation in Jharkhand”, Rai said the number of violent incidents in the state fell by 82%, from a high of 742 in 2009 to 132 in 2022. The number of districts covered under the security-related expenditure reimbursement scheme in Jharkhand too had reduced from 19 in 2018 to 16 in 2021, he added.
Rai said the Government of India’s multi-pronged strategy to beat Naxalism — envisaged as part of National Policy and Action Plan to address Left-wing extremism approved in 2015 — had brought down incidents of Maoist violence by 77% in 2022 as compared to a high witnessed in 2010. Also, the number of resultant deaths of security forces and civilians had declined by 90% from an all-time-high of 1,005 in 2010 to 98 in 2022.
The MoS added that the geographical spread of Left-wing extremist violence had shrunk from 465 police stations of 96 districts in 2010 to 176 police stations across 45 districts in 2022. “Decline in geographical spread is also reflected in the reduced number of districts covered under the SRE scheme,” he said while underlining the dip in number of SRE districts from 126 to 90 in April 2018 and further to 70 in July 2021.
