NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday chargesheeted six more CPI (Maoist) cadres in a case relating to the 2021 Naxal attack in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh that had left 22 security personnel dead.
The second supplementary chargesheet, filed on Tuesday in the NIA Special Court at Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, names Manoj Podiyami @ Masa, Mula Devender Reddy @ Masa Dada, Vijja Hemla, Kesha Sodi @ Malla, Mallesh @ Mallesh Kunjam and Sonu @ Dodi Sonu. They have been charged under various sections of UA(P)Act 1967, Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act and the IPC.
Earlier, 40 accused were chargesheeted in the same case — including 23 named in the original chargesheet filed in December 2022, followed by 17 in the supplementary chargesheet filed in July 2023. With the second supplementary chargesheet now also filed, a total 46 accused have been chargesheeted so far in the case registered by NIA on June 5, 2021.
The deadly attack on security personnel was carried out in 2021 by CPI (Maoist) cadres on the directions of top leaders of the proscribed organisation, NIA said on Wednesday. The cadres had launched the gruesome assault with automatic weapons and barre grenade launchers (BGL) when combined teams of DRG, CoBRA and CRPF were conducting search operations against the Maoist cadres near Tekalgudiyam village, Tarrem. During the attack, the accused had also looted weapons and abducted one CoBRA soldier. He was however released later.
Investigations to nab others involved in the offensive against the security forces are continuing, NIA said on Wednesday.
