A diamond broker, who assured to buy the diamonds, had fled with the diamonds and subsequently an FIR was registered in October. The police arrested the accused and recovered the diamonds from his possession.
The company’s employee had lodged an FIR of cheating with the police.Investigators later arrested a diamond broker, Mayur Suru (51), in this case.
Police said that a Gujarat based diamond manufacturing and trading company through someone learnt that a buyer wanted to buy their diamonds. The company sent its employee with 88 diamonds to the diamond market in BKC to meet the buyer. Suru, who is a diamond broker, allegedly posed as buyer and called the complainant in a building near Panchratna. The complainant reached there with a colleague and found Suru sitting in his office. “After examining the diamonds, Suru said he would buy 68 diamonds worth Rs 1.1 crore and returned 20 diamonds to the complainant. The complainant asked Suru to give Rs seven lakh in cash as security till the time the billing work is completed. He further told Suru that once the bill is ready and the buyer transfers money in his company’s account, Rs seven lakh would be returned to him. Suru called a man who brought Rs seven lakh and gave it to the complainant,” said police.
After sometimes Suru allegedly told the complainant that he did not have a cash counting machine and that they could go to an angadiy shop in Panchratna. There, Suru asked them to count the money. “Suru then told the complainant that he wanted to go to the washroom and will return soon. Suru left with the diamonds but did not return. After waiting for a long time, the complainant made several calls to Suru who picked up the call and kept saying that he would come back soon. However, he did not. The complainant then approached the police and gave his complaint,” said police.
A team supervised by DCP Mohit Garg and comprising senior PI Vinay Ghorpade and officers Rajaram Pol and Nitin Zade studied the CCTV footage and using the technical intelligence police team later arrested Suru from south Mumbai. “We frisked him and recovered 100 per cent diamonds belonging to the complainant’s company.
