NEW DELHI: Indian women are undergoing hysterectomy, a surgical procedure to remove uterus to prevent pregnancy, at a much younger age than the women in developed countries.
There exists a gap of 9-17 years between women in India and those in developed countries who opt for hysterectomy procedures, the Union government informed the Supreme Court on Friday.
Submitting the affidavit on behalf of the ministry of health and family welfare, additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati informed the court that “in developed countries, hysterectomy is typically amongst premenopausal women above the age of 45 years. In India, community based studies have consistently found rising hysterectomy rates among young women, ranging from 28 to 36 years of age.”
Interestingly, the National Family Health Survey of 2015-16 had estimated hysterectomy prevalence to be 3.6% among women aged between 36-39 years, 9.2% amongst women aged 40-49 years and the media age for hysterectomy was 37 years.
Responding to a PIL which alleged forcible hysterectomy procedures being carried out in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the Centre said field -based studies have also indicated that “unnecessary hysterectomies are performed pm women where medical ore non-invasive treatment would have been sufficient”.
Since the launch of Ayushman Bharat PM-Jan Arogya Yojna in 2018, the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance scheme providing health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year to 12 crore families, as many as 45,434 hospital admissions worth Rs 126 crore have been authorized under it for hysterectomy related treatment, the government said.
Interestingly, nearly two-thirds of the total hysterectomy cases, or 33, 559 procedures, were conducted in private hospitals and only 11,875 in government hospitals. On average, each procedure costs the government Rs 27,756 under the PM-JAY scheme.
In the last five years since the launch of the health assurance scheme, Uttar Pradesh conducted the highest hysterectomy procedures at 10,341, followed by Kerala 7,549, Gujarat 6,605. Haryana 5,034, Madhya Pradesh 2,913, Andhra Pradesh 2,525, and Uttarakhand 2,042.
