GURGAON: The national secretary of the Sanyukt Ahir Regiment Morcha, which has been demanding the creation of an Ahir regiment in the Army, was shot at on Thursday morning. Monu Yadav, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Manesar, was said to be out of danger.
Police said Monu and the youths who allegedly fired at him were from the same village in Kherki Daula and had filed several cases against each other in connection with a property dispute. The names of the accused were not immediately clear.
The attack on Monu comes days after a group of youths from the village created a ruckus at the Kherki Daula toll plaza, where the morcha members have been protesting for the past several months.
Manoj Yadav, the Morcha president, alleged that on February 19, the group of youths also assaulted the outfit’s members under the influence of alcohol. “We called police and they were taken to the Kherki Daula police station. But the trouble makers were released without any substantial action,” he added.
On February 22, the members held a meeting among themselves and Monu lodged an official police complaint for the ruckus three days earlier. An FIR was registered under relevant IPC sections.
Monu alleged that ever since he approached the cops, he had been getting threat calls on his personal number. “I ignored them initially. But I was a little worried when they became too frequent. On February 28, I went to the police again,” he told TOI.
On Thursday morning, Monu was on his way to Shikohpur village when 4-5 men intercepted his vehicle on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). The accused fired at Monu twice and fled. The senior Morcha functionary suffered injuries in the back and was taken to a hospital.
Doctors said Monu was out of danger. A fresh FIR was registered at Kherki Daula police station under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
Police said the incident could be the outcome of old enmity as Monu was embroiled in a property dispute. “A case has been registered under relevant sections and a police team is trying to arrest the accused,” said Subhash Boken, a spokesperson for the police.
The Morcha has been protesting since February last year for the creation of an Ahir regiment in the Army. The outfit’s members have set up a camp near the Kherki Daula toll plaza, from where they have taken out marches.
