The SC verdict upholding nullification of Article 370 came as a huge boost to BJP as the party saw fulfilment of one of its longest drawn and foundational promises soon after returning to office in 2019. Protesting the permit system under Article 370, Syama Prasad Mookerjee had quit the Nehru ministry and floated own political outfit, Jan Sangh, with the slogan “Nahi chalenge ek desh mein do vidhan, do pradhan aur do nishan”, a mantra for BJP cadres as the party continued with its pledge to remove Article 370.
BJP claims Mookerjee was martyred for the cause of integrating Kashmir with the rest of India. Mookerjee’s death gave birth to another slogan – “Jahaan hue balidaan Mookerjee, woh Kashmir hamara hai” – which became one of the rallying cries of the Jan Sangh and its affiliates. Mookerjee was the president of Hindu Mahasabha and later founded Jan Sangh, the predecessor of BJP, with help from RSS. The legislation on August 5, 2019, and the SC verdict on Monday, has led to jubilation among BJP cadres. “Today’s decision is like a nation’s tribute to the sacrifice of Dr Mookerjee,” VHP president Alok Kumar said.
