GANDHINAGAR: PM Narendra Modi on Friday said the New Education Policy will change the system of “kitabi gyan” (bookish knowledge) while its stress on local languages will help nurture rural talent.
Addressing teachers gathered here from across the country for the 29th Biennial Educational Conference, organised by the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation, the PM said Google can give data and information but the role of teachers is to be the mentors of students. A small change by teachers can bring about monumental transformation in the lives of young students, he said.
“Earlier, we used to give just ‘kitaabi gyan’ to our students, but this will change with the introduction of the new education policy which focuses on practical learning,” Modi said. “Now it’s the responsibility of teachers to implement this system on the ground,” Modi in an appeal to teachers and recalled how one of his school teachers used to make him and other students learn about numbers using grains.
“After Independence, English became a dominant language. Even today, parents want their kids to study in English medium. As a result, talented teachers from villages and from poor family backgrounds stopped getting opportunities just because they never got a chance to learn English. Since NEP puts stress on education in local languages, it will help such teachers in getting opportunities,” he said.
Praising the “noble profession” of teaching, Modi said many leaders like the royal rulers of Bhutan and Saudi Arabia had told him that they had received their education from teachers from India. “The King of Saudi Arabia (Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud) told me that his teacher was from Gujarat,” Modi said, adding that during his first overseas visit after becoming the Prime Minister, the King of Bhutan also told him that he had an Indian teacher.
Modi said though he has never been a teacher in his entire life, he has been a lifelong student who observes things happening in society.
No discrimination is true secularism: PM
PM Narendra Modi on Friday cast “true secularism” as one where there is no “discrimination”, pointed out that his government does not look at the religion or caste of welfare schemes’ beneficiaries and stressed that there is no greater social justice than “working for the happiness and convenience of all”.
Flagging off projects worth Rs 4,400 crore here, Modi cited the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana as an example of his assertions, saying it has become a tool for women empowerment as 70 per cent of the 4 crore houses built for the poor under this scheme were given to women. “I understand true secularism is where there is no discrimination (of caste, creed or religion). For those who talk about social justice, it is working for 100 per cent of their rights (of all). This is the path on which we are walking,” Modi said.
