NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA), on Sunday, asserted that it is in working closely with investigative authorities in connection with the case relating to the Uttar Pradesh police arresting an Indian embassy staffer for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI.
An Indian embassy staffer posted in Moscow is currently under investigation for accusations of spying on behalf of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, according to official sources.
The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police, after conducting an interrogation in Lucknow, arrested Satendra Siwal.
Satendra Siwal, a resident of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh, has been apprehended for his suspected involvement in “anti-India activities,” according to an official statement by Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) issued on Sunday.
The MEA has been informed about the arrest of Satendra Siwal in Uttar Pradesh. He previously served as a Security Assistant at the Embassy of India in Moscow, the sources said.
“MEA continues to work with the investigative authorities in the matter,” reported news agency ANI quoting sources.
Siwal exchanged vital confidential information, providing the ISI with insights into strategic operations of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian military establishment, in lieu of money.
An FIR has been filed against Siwal at the ATS police station in Lucknow, invoking charges under Section 121A of the IPC (waging war against the country) and the Official Secrets Act, as mentioned in the statement.
According to the statement, Siwal was summoned to the ATS field unit in Meerut, where he admitted to his crime during questioning.
