NEW DELHI: In a recent development in the Gyanvapi case, the Supreme Court has decided to extend the stay on the Allahabad High Court’s order appointing a Commission for the Shahi Eidgah Mosque, concerning the Mathura Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Masjid dispute. This extension will remain in effect until the next scheduled hearing.
In a related development, a Hindu plaintiff has filed an application in the Supreme Court, urging the court to revoke its May 19, 2023, order that temporarily suspended the scientific survey of a ‘Shivling’ reportedly discovered within the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi during a videographic survey.
The application specifically requests the Supreme Court to direct the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a thorough investigation and survey of the alleged “Shivling.” The aim is to determine its nature and associated features without causing any harm to the sacred structure located within the sealed area.
The proposed survey involves the removal of artificial and modern walls/floors surrounding the ‘Shivling.’
Additionally, the application advocates for a comprehensive examination of the entire sealed area through excavation and the use of other scientific methods, with the requirement to submit a detailed report afterward.
The Supreme Court has further adjourned the hearing on matters until April. The court has instructed all involved parties to complete their pleadings and submit written submissions ahead of the rescheduled hearing date.
