Manipur violence: Over 300 Meiteis from Moreh have taken shelter in Myanmar

IMPHAL: The Manipur strife has taken a new turn with 300 Meiteis living in the border town of Moreh reportedly entering neighbouring Myanmar for shelter. This comes at a time when the N Biren Singh government has given refuge to around 500 illegal Myanmarese immigrants — who escaped their strife-torn Junta-ruled country — in Imphal.
“Over 300 Meitei residents of Moreh, including women and children, have crossed the border and entered Myanmar so far. The majority of us, including myself, have taken shelter at the camp of 5 Assam Rifles,” said L Maipak, a Moreh resident. “We have reports that they (the 300 persons) are putting up at a safe place in Myanmar. However, we are still worrying about their fate,” Maipak added, appealing to the authorities to ensure they are safe and are repatriated to Manipur when normalcy returns.
Manipur shares a 390-km porous border with Myanmar, and the construction of a 10-km fence along the Moreh sector is under way.
