JAMMU: The J&K administration is ready to hold panchayat and urban local body polls but the process has been “slightly delayed” because of planned quota hikes for women and rationalisation of voter lists, lieutenant-governor (LG) Manoj Sinha said here on Friday.
These grassroots elections were due in Nov 2023, with the last such exercise held in 2018, before the abrogation of special status under Article 370 in Aug 2019.
“I assure everyone that under the leadership of Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), a strong three-tier Panchayati Raj system has been established in J&K. We are committed to empowering local government institutions and strengthening grassroots governance,” Sinha told a Republic Day event.
The LG reaffirmed his resolve to “dismantle the terror ecosystem and combat proxy war from the neighbouring country”, alluding to Pakistan. He recalled a successful G20 group meeting in Srinagar last year, saying it familiarised the entire world with the economic strength, business capabilities, cultural prosperity, and tourism possibilities of J&K while dealing a resounding blow to terror.
Sinha highlighted the rapid strides J&K had made since the 2019 abrogation and its conversion into a Union territory, saying economic assistance of Rs 1384 crore had been provided to nearly a lakh entrepreneurs, who “as job creators” will contribute significantly to strengthening the local economy.
Since 2021-22, opportunities for self-employment have been provided to 8.34 lakh youths, 31,830 people have been recruited in the government, and 12,264 new positions are being created, the LG said.
According to Sinha, measures have been taken to boost agriculture, with expansion of storage facilities while Rs 2852 crore has been deposited directly into the bank accounts of 12.68 lakh farmers under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
