Manipur: Congress’s all out attack on Centre over Manipur violence, Shashi Tharoor favours lifting internet ban | India News

NEW DELHI: Even as senior Congress leaders have been demanding some comments from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing violence in Manipur since May 3, party MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday spoke in favour of lifting the ban on internet in the strife-torn northeastern state.
In a tweet, Tharoor, a Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, talked about the Supreme Court hearing on Monday the government’s appeal against a Manipur high court order, relaxing the “draconian” ban on the internet that has “crippled” digital life in the state for the last three months.
He said, “The parliamentary standing committee on information technology had sharply observed in 2022 that there is no justification provided by the government that demonstrates in any way that internet shutdowns actually impede, let alone prevent, violence or terrorism anywhere. It is a reflexive bureaucratic action that causes far more inconvenience to ordinary citizens than a useful security measure.”
Tharoor said, “It is bizarre that India is the only democracy in the world that routinely resorts to internet shutdowns for extended periods of time, with no appreciable effect on violence, but causing considerable inconvenience to ordinary citizens. I hope the Supreme Court will stand up for the rights of citizens rather than for the blinkered babus who are completely indifferent to the impact of their decisions on citizens who use the Internet for banking, credit card transactions, enrolments, examinations, &to obtain all kinds of vital information,” and added that the court must end this “awful” practice now.
Congress MP and head of the party communications department Jairam Ramesh, who has been vocal in demanding Modi’s remarks on Manipur tweeted again on Sunday. He said, “PM Modi calls Delhi LG from Paris to inquire about the flood situation in the nation’s capital. He did so again last evening on arrival back home. All this news is given out. But not a single word of concern on Manipur. Forget calling the CM. Has the PM even spoken to or met with his ministerial colleague the MoS (external affairs) who is from Manipur?”
Without naming the Union minister of state for external affairs, Ramesh was talking about Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, who belongs to Manipur.
Born at Kongba Nandeibam Leikai in Imphal East, Manipur, Singh is a Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur.
“The PM’s attitude is really beyond comprehension of any normal human being,” Ramesh added.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, on Saturday, attacked the BJP government over its Act East policy/
He said, “The ‘Act East’ policy of the Modi government has become the ‘Act Least’ policy for our northeastern states. India, today, is witnessing an onslaught of the BJP’s vicious politics of division and discord.”
Kharge alleged that communities are being pitted against each other, freedom of speech is under attack and fundamental rights are being questioned.
He further alleged that the solid foundation of peace, tranquility and progress established by the successive Congress governments is being systematically dismantled.
He accused the ruling BJP of appropriating the important life-changing projects, implemented by the Congress party in the Northeast to seek fake credit.
The Congress president said it is time for every leader and worker of the Congress party to unite everyone. Unity in diversity is not only our hallmark but the basis of our existence. “It is time to hit the ground running and start from the booth level. Reach out to people and strongly raise the voice of our fellow citizens in the Northeast. No opposition can withstand the power of truth,” he said.
A meeting of the leaders of from the northeastern states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and Sikkim was held on Saturday in the Congress’s Delhi headquarters. The meeting had been called for the prepration of Lok Sabha elections. A meeting with Mizoram leaders was already held on July 6.
Kharge said, “The deteriorating situation in Manipur is of grave concern to us. We will do everything to foster peace and resolve issues in the border state. The Congress party is determined to fight for our constitutional ethos – social justice, peace, progress and welfare of the northeastern states.”
Former Congress MP Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a tweet on Saturday, he said, “Manipur burns. The EU Parliament discusses India’s internal matter. The PM has not said a word on either! Meanwhile, Rafale gets him a ticket to the Bastille Day Parade.”
He was referring to the European Parliament which recently passed a resolution on the Manipur violence.
