CHANDIGARH: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Anandpur Sahib Malvinder Singh Kang kicked off his election campaign for the Lok Sabha elections on Monday. He was accompanied by Cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains, besides the local AAP MLAs as he travelled in a cavalcade from Mohali to Anandpur Sahib while paying obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan, Takht Kesgarh Sahib and Naina Devi.
Kang, who started off as a students’ leader with two terms as president of the Panjab University Students’ Council (2002-03), said the Anandpur Sahib constituency had been ignored by the previous MPs of the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) despite its immense tourism potential.
“For instance, there is a lot of sporting talent in areas like Balachaur and Banga and there is a need to create infrastructure so that local youth can excel at international level in volleyball and football. The state government is doing its bit but there are several schemes like the Khelo India program that can help in channelizing the energy of youngsters,” he said.
After getting a degree in laws, Kang had joined the BJP and was appointed its state general secretary. However, he quit the saffron party in October 2020 in protest against the three farm laws and switched to AAP the next year. He was appointed by AAP as the party incharge of the Anandpur Sahib constituency.
“The BJP’s political agenda is based on hatred and against the communal harmony of the country. It does not gel with the culture of Anandpur Sahib where the tenth master gave his message. The BJP has exposed itself by targeting the protesting farmers of the state and has lost the moral right to seek votes in Punjab,” added Kang.
Speaking to media persons in Mohali, Kang said, “The party leadership has given me an opportunity to contribute to AAP’s fight to save the democracy of the country. I will work to protect the rights of the people and raise the issues of the constituency in the parliament.”
The AAP has seven MLAs in the nine Assembly segments falling in the Anandpur Sahib constituency and of these six MLAs were present in Kang’s roadshow. Garhshankar MLA Jai Krishan Singh could not join as he had to attend a function. In Anandpur Sahib, AAP workers used a JCB machine to shower flower petals at Kang’s cavalcade.
Meanwhile, Harjot Bains said the previous MPs elected from Anandpur Sahib – Prem Singh Chandumajra and Manish Tewari – did not raise the issues of the state in the parliament. “Kang will raise his voice against the Centre on issues such as representation in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and pending funds of national health mission (NHM),” he said.
