Local efforts helped curb violence in Manipur: Security adviser | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: Local outreach by the Manipur administration to different communities through peace committees, community leaders as well as church bodies — which have been relaying appeals to their people to maintain calm and helping to quell mischievous rumours — has been instrumental in arresting violent incidents in the state, adviser (security) to the Manipur government Kuldiep Singh said on Sunday.
“The situation is much better today. No major incidents of violence were seen in the past 24 hours; only a few small clashes and instances of tension caused by rumours,” said Singh, who was brought in by the state government after violence broke out in parts of the state during a tribal solidarity march on Wednesday. The incidents, he said, are concentrated in areas on the outskirts of the Valley and the foothills, since people of different communities dominate the Valley and hills. Many times rumours and mistrust trigger tension between communities, he said.
To take care of the element of mistrust and mischievous rumours, the Manipur administration, guided by the home ministry that is closely monitoring the situation through regular reviews chaired by home minister Amit Shah, has reached out to the district peace committees, community leaders and the church bodies.
