NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Monday release the first instalment of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) for one lakh beneficiaries.
The PM will also interact with the beneficiaries of PM-JANMAN from particulatly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) via video conferencing.The event will be held in more than 100 districts.
A statement from the PMO highlighted that PM-JANMAN was launched “in line with the PM’s efforts towards the vision of Antyodaya to empower the last person at the last mile.” The Abhiyan or Mission was flagged off by Modi on ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas‘ from Khunti on the birth anniversary of tribal icon Birsa Munda on November 15.
Since the launch of the ambitious scheme in November aimed at holistic development of 75 particularly vulnerable tribal groups with an estimated population of about 28 lakh, projects of more than Rs 4,700 crore have been approved by nine ministries across sectors as wide ranging as housing, roads, anganwadis, hostels and electrification, as per the information shared by the central government.
The focus on socio-economic development of PVTGs is seen as an important component of the BJP-led government’s tribal outreach ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The Mission has a total outlay of Rs 24,104 crore. PM-JANMAN focuses on 11 critical interventions through nine ministries and is aimed to improve socio-economic conditions of PVTGs by saturating PVTG households and habitations with basic facilities such as safe housing, clean drinking water and sanitation, improved access to education, health and nutrition, electricity, road and telecom connectivity, and sustainable livelihood opportunities in the next three years.
Tribal affairs minister Arjun Munda who will be joining the programme on Monday from Bishnupur in Gumla sees the Abhiyan as a “strong step” to reach PVTG household on the ground and address their needs.
Besides housing, among other projects sanctioned so far, are 1,207 kilometres of roads out of a total target of 8,000 kilometres for 2023-26. Similarly 100 hostels out of a total target of 500 have been sanctioned by the ministry of education. As far as anganwadis go, 916 have been sanctioned out of which 816 will be operational by the end of this month. The target for 2023-2026 is 2,500 anganwadis.
In order to reach every household in last three weeks more than 7,000 camps have been organised in PVTG habitations of all 188 districts where PVTGs reside with support of UIDAI, CSC, NHA, ministry of rural development, ministry of power and department of financial services so as to facilitate making of Aadhar cards, opening of Jan Dhan accounts, Ayushman cards and registrations for different schemes under the mission.
Data shared by the government shows that in last 25 days 70,000 new Aadhaar cards and 82,000 Ayushman Bharat cards have been made. Similarly, individual forest rights under the Forest Rights Act have been given to 10,396 beneficiaries and 49,916 caste certificates issued.
“The data shows that due to remoteness of locations and lack of road and digital connectivity many habitations and persons were completely left out of benefits of flagship schemes,” officials said to highlight that they are now getting covered through this outreach.
