NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court verdict upholding the Centre’s decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370, which bestowed special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, will come as a shot in the arm for the BJP as it gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP already has a strong momentum thanks to the convincing victories in the just-concluded assembly elections in the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
Abrogation of Article 370 and the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya were the two most important election promises that the BJP made to its voters over the years. Today’s apex court verdict puts a seal on both these key promises made by the party. The BJP has hailed the SC verdict as “historic” and said the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave new strength to the unity and integrity of India.
Welcoming the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution as “historic”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Monday that it is not just a legal judgment, but a “beacon of hope” and a testament to the collective resolve to build a stronger and more united India.
In a post on X, Modi said the Supreme Court verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 is “historic” and constitutionally upholds the decision taken by Parliament on August 5, 2019.
The Ram Temple‘s ‘Pran Pratishtha’ (consecration ceremony) will be held on January 22, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the proceedings in the presence of saints from across the country and thousand of devotees. There are elaborate plans to make this historic moment memorable and the build up to it has already started.
The BJP will hope that these two landmark achievements will give the party a huge advantage in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Add to this, the recent success of Modi’s guarantees in the three Hindi heartland states where people backed the BJP.
Five years back in 2018, the Congress had won all the three states and yet the BJP sweeped the Lok Sabha elections in them. This time around the BJP will have its governments in all the three states in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls. Also, the records show that the BJP under the leadership of PM Modi does a lot better in national elections compared to the assembly elections.
The opposition parties on the other hand still remain a divided lot. The INDIA platform that was formed with much fanfare to challenge the BJP is yet to take off in the real sense. The bloc made some good progress initially, but then the Congress slowed its momentum due to the assembly elections. What’s worse, the state elections brought to fore the differences between the parties. The bloc leaders will be meeting again on December 19. However, they will need a lot more than just simple unity, which in itself is a tough ask, to pose any real challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA.
For now, it seems the Article 370 verdict and the grand Ram Temple inauguration being planned will ensure that the focus and also the momentum remains with the BJP.
