NEW DELHI: The Shivraj Singh Chouhan era has finally come to an end in Madhya Pradesh. The BJP leader, who served as chief minister of the state for nearly two decades, had posted a message “Sabhi ko Ram Ram (`Ram Ram’ to all)” on X, leading to speculations about his future. The BJP on Monday announced Mohan Yadav, a three-time MLA from Ujjain, as the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh replacing Chouhan.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has served the longest tenure as chief minister of the state, had all along maintained that he is not in contention for the top job and will he happy to take on any role decided by the party high command.In fact, he did not go to Delhi after the assembly election victory and said that his only aim was to ensure that the BJP won all the 29 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the upcoming elections. He visited Chindwara, where the BJP could not win any seat.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan played a key role in the party’s victory with his government’s welfare scheme Ladli Behna immensely popular among women of the state. However, other contenders to the CM’s post maintained that it was Prime Minister Modi’s popularity that contributed to the BJP’s victory. In fact, Shivraj Singh Chouhan had lost the 2018 assembly elections after winning three consecutive terms in the state. However, a revolt by Jyotiraditya Scindia led to the downfall of the Congress government and Shivraj returned as the chief minister for the fourth time.
The saffron party won a landslide in the just concluded assembly elections, bagging 163 seats with a vote share of 48.6%. The Congress, which was hoping to return to power after losing its government to defections, was restricted to just 66 seats in the 230-member assembly with 40.4% of votes.
Earlier today, the three central observers of the party, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar OBC Morcha head K Laxman and secretary Asha Lakra, had met Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Madhya Pradesh is the second state where the BJP has gone for a new leadership. On Sunday, the BJP picked Vishnu Deo Sai, a prominent tribal leader, as the next chief minister of Chhattisgarh. Former chief minister Raman Singh who headed BJP government in the state for three consecutive terms starting from 2003 to 2018 was overlooked as the party went for a new line of leadership keeping the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in mind.
The BJP won 54 out of the total 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh in the recently held elections, reducing Congress’s tally to 35.
