DEHRADUN: The current spell of heavy rain, which has led to Ganga flowing near the danger mark, has resulted in crocodiles coming out of their natural habitat in the river, and taking refuge in residential areas on the riverbank in Haridwar district.
“Due to swollen rivers and heavy rains, we are witnessing a high number of crocodilesbeing swept into human habitations. In barely a fortnight, at least 10 crocodiles have been caugt from various places, including courtyards of houses,” said Neeraj Verma, divisional forest officer, Haridwar.
Anumber of croc sightings have been reported in Laksar, Khanpur and Roorkee areas of the district too, sparking concerns among residents.
Naresh Kumar, former village head of Khanpur, said, “On July 15, due to the rising water in Solani river, a croc entered the courtyard of a house at Harijan Basti in our village. The family spent hours in terror. Timely intervention by the forest department helped avoid an untoward incident. ”
Another resident from Kheri Mubarakpur area in Haridwar district, Ajeet Mavi, said, “On the night of July 14, a 10-feet-long mugger was spotted in a plot close to our house. The crocodile was eventually trapped the next day. ” He added, “Heaps of waste dumped in the village pond has aggravated the situation as the water body has become the perfect breeding site for crocodiles. ”
Dinesh Naudiyal, range officer of Haridwar, said, “We have set up a round-the-clock 20-member rapid response team (RRT) to control the situation as, in the past, people have had a close shave with snakes too. On an average, 12-15 snakes are being captured every day. ”
