Gehlot-Pilot spat gives Modi ammo to target ‘selfish’ Congress | India News

JAIPUR: PM Narendra Modi fired a broadside at Congress in poll-bound Rajasthan on Wednesday as a party too “selfish” to serve the people, saying the running battle between CM Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot was proof of a trust deficit between the leadership and MLAs.
Modi, who was speaking at a BJP event near Mount Abu in Sirohi district a day after Rahul Gandhi’s visit there, alleged that Congress had been a divided house in the state for the longest time, affecting governance the most.
“Over the past five years, politics in Rajasthan has taken an ugly turn,” the PM said, alluding to the Pilot-led revolt against Gehlot in 2020 whose hangover Congress has been nursing since.
“The focus seems to be more on gaining and retaining power than serving people. The CM and his MLAs are competing in humiliating one another. Such a situation does not bode well for Rajasthan,” Modi said.
He alleged that law and order in the desert state, which goes to polls at the end of the year, had deteriorated significantly, evidenced by criminals “operating with impunity as Congress remains enslaved to its vote bank and afraid to take any action against them”.
“Rajasthan’s crime rate, which was once relatively low, has increased sharply under Congress, with women being the worst-affected. Traditional festivals like Teej have become a source of anxiety and uncertainty for women in the state,” Modi said.
Like he had done while campaigning in Karnataka, the PM also charged Congress with being consistently lenient towards terror “for the sake of appeasement”. He claimed the party was always ready to support terrorist ideology, citing the “poor prosecution” in the Jaipur blasts case that led to the Rajasthan HC setting aside a trial court’s verdict and acquitting the four convicts in March.
The PM next spoke of the tribal population being “betrayed” by Congress. “Tribal society had placed its trust in Congress for many years, but due to their misrule, there was no development in Sirohi, Jaisalmer, Karauli and Baran.” He said Karnataka’s Hakki Pikki tribe, too, had been at the receiving end of Congress’s alleged apathy. “The party put the lives of Hakki Pikki tribals stranded in strife-hit Sudan by making a poll issue of it even as BJP was focused on evacuating them safely, which we did.”
