Gangster shot dead in encounter with police in Kathua, injured cop dies during treatment | India News

JAMMU: A gangster was shot dead in an exchange of fire with police near Government Medical College (GMC) in Kathua, Jammu, while a probationary sub-inspector, who suffered head injuries during the Tuesday night encounter, succumbed in hospital.
A special police officer was also injured in the gunfight that took place when police had gone to arrest the gangster, Vasudev, and his associates.
Police said acting on a tip-off, a team of cops chased Vasudev, a key accused in a murder case, and his associates, leading to the shootout around 10.35 pm. While Vasudev was gunned down, one of his associates as well as SI Deepak Sharma and SPO Anil Kumar, both posted at Ramgarh police station, were wounded in the exchange of fire.
The injured cops were taken to GMC-Kathua, and later shifted to Amandeep Hospital in Pathankot, but Sharma died during treatment.
Jammu & Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha Wednesday expressed condolences to the SI’s family and said “every drop of the blood of our martyr will be avenged”. DGP R R Swain said “J&K Police pariwar” was united behind Sharma’s family.
