NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old British police officer claimed that she was raped at knifepoint beneath the Eiffel Tower on Monday, reported The Daily Mail.
The incident came to the fore after the officer logged a complaint with the French police wherein she claimed that a man assaulted her at the Champ-de-Mars, located near the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The British cop claimed that she was raped at knifepoint after she tried to defend herself.
As reported by Le Parisien, the attacker targeted the woman when she was behind a bush to go to the toilet.
The alleged attacker fled the spot after raping the woman. French police arrested a 35-year-old man an hour after receiving the woman’s complaint. The woman cop had come to France as a tourist and was staying overnight with a friend, reported The French Daily.
The woman was briefly apart from her friend when the accused showed a weapon and attacked her. She called for help right after it happened. An anti-crime team quickly arrived, and later, the 35-year-old was arrested by police from the 7th police station. He spent the night in police custody.
Having arrested the man, the French police are probing the matter as the incident comes amid increased patrolling in the area in the past few days following the Hamas-Israel conflict, which prompted the French government to deploy additional troops to ensure law and order in the capital.
The Champ de Mars, a large garden, is set to be a key site during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The garden is also a popular spot for tourists. Unlike most parks in Paris Champ de Mars remains open round-the-clock. However,
the reported rape could put pressure on Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo to close the park during the night.
