Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi Welcomes Centre’s Decision to Award Bharat Ratna to Former Prime Ministers | India News

NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday welcomed Centre’s decision to award Bharat Ratna to former prime ministers P V Narsimha Rao, Chuadhary Charan Singh and agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan.
“I welcome it,” Sonia Gandhi said when asked about the awards. Narasimha Rao’s kin, while welcoming the government’s decision, blamed the Congress and the Gandhis for not recognising its leader who was Prime Minister of Congress government for full five-year term during 1991-96.
His grandson NV Subhash blamed the UPA government and the Gandhis for making Narasimha Rao a scapegoat for the failures of the Congress party.
“PM Modi has conferred PV Narasimha Rao, though he belongs to the Congress party. Now, I blame the UPA government, especially the Gandhi family, from 2004 to 2014, when the UPA government was in power at the Centre, leave alone Bharat Ratna or any awards, the Gandhi family was very, very instrumental in making Narasimha Rao a scapegoat for the failures of the Congress party,” NV Subhash said.
BRS MLC and daughter of PV Narasimha Rao, Surabhi Vani Devi, also expressed her happiness and termed it “great recognition.”
Appreciating the BJP for honouring Narasimha Rao with the country’s highest honour, Surabhi said, “This is a very happy moment. Great recognition. I am so excited. If you go through the days–5 years from 1991 to 1996–that was a very crucial time in Indian history, but he has solved the problems. It is surprising that Rao was not in BJP, from the beginning he has worked with the Congress but BJP has recognised him with Bharat Ratna. This is a great moment. We must appreciate.”
Announcing Bharat Ratna to Narasimha Rao, PM Modi wrote on X, “Delighted to share that our former Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna. As a distinguished scholar and statesman, Narasimha Rao Garu served India extensively in various capacities. He is equally remembered for the work he did as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and as a Member of Parliament and Legislative Assembly for many years. His visionary leadership was instrumental in making India economically advanced, laying a solid foundation for the country’s prosperity and growth.”
With today’s announcement, the Modi government has announced five Bharat Ratna awards in the last one month. Overall the BJP-led NDA government has conferred 10 Bharat Ratna in the last 10 years.
