NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has issued an apology to Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien for referring to him as a “foreigner”. Chowdhury personally reached out to O’Brien to express his regrets and also posted on social media, saying, “I conveyed my regrets to Mr. Derek O’Brien for a word inadvertently uttered by me on him as FOREIGNER.”
Sources have confirmed that O’Brien has accepted the apology from the Congress leader. This development comes after Chowdhury made the controversial remark during a press interaction in Siliguri on Thursday night. In response to O’Brien blaming him for the breakdown of seat-sharing talks between their respective parties in West Bengal, Chowdhury had said, “Derek O’Brien is a foreigner, he knows a lot of things. Ask him.”
Chowdhury’s comment faced widespread criticism on social media platforms. Pradyot Manikya, the chairman of Tipra Motha, expressed his disappointment in a post on social media, saying, “How is this inclusiveness? I know Derek O’Brien, and to question his nationality is really showing how intelligent this man is! Sadly, such men are at the helm of decision making.”
O’Brien, who has been a vocal supporter of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), alleged that Chowdhury was working in tandem with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasized that while the bloc had faced many detractors, it was only the BJP and Chowdhury who consistently spoke against it.
