PANAJI: Goa police have filed charges against the owner of a seafront resort overlooking Ashwem beach in Mandrem following a complaint lodged by Italy’s honorary vice consul Shrinivas Dempo regarding an incident where celebratory fireworks from the property caused grievous injuries to the Italian ambassador’s wife Paola Ferri on January 1.
In his letter to the chief secretary, Dempo detailed the incident, stating that Italian ambassador Vincenzo De Luca, along with his family and friends, had chosen to celebrate New Year’s Eve at Babu beach resort in Mandrem. However, their celebration took a tragic turn when Paola was struck by a firework allegedly launched from the adjacent Anahata resort.
Dempo said the resort owner’s negligent act of allowing fireworks endangered human life and resulted in severe head injuries to Paola. She was promptly admitted to Vision Hospital in Goa, where she underwent a medical procedure and received three stitches.
As Paola continues her recovery, Dempo underscored the gravity of the incident, especially considering its impact on a member of the diplomatic community. “It is essential to identify the parties responsible and take appropriate action to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future,” he wrote.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the matter, the chief secretary directed the North Goa collector to conduct a thorough inquiry. The letter was forwarded to Mandrem police station for action.
