THANE: A fire broke out at an ATM kiosk in Dombivli when one or more unidentified persons were in the process of trying to break open the ATM machine to steal cash early Sunday morning. According to the bank’s estimate, Rs 21 lakh in currency notes in the ATM was reduced to ashes.
A gas cutter and other tools that were being used to jimmy the machine, and had been left behind were giveaways that a heist was being attempted when the fire broke out, police said. Cops have found that before fleeing the scene, the accused damaged CCTV cameras and the digital video recorder at the kiosk.
The incident took place between 1 am to 2 am at State Bank Of India’s ATM kiosk on Mahatma Phule Road, Dombivli (West). The incident came to light when a customer, who had gone there to withdraw cash, alerted the cops who in turn alerted bank officials and a private company tasked with refilling cash into the machine.
Police said that the robbers first broke open the lock of the shutter to enter the kiosk. They then used a gas cutter to force open the cash-dispensing unit. “It seems the intense heat generated in the process sparked a fire in the machine,” said senior inspector Mohan Khandare.
An employee of the cash refilling system said: “We found cash in the machine burnt to ashes. An enquiry shows Rs 21,11,800 in cash was in the machine at the time.”
