MUMBAI: The first FIR for a traffic violation was registered on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) or Atal Setu on Tuesday against an autorickshaw driver for plying a vehicle not permitted on the sea bridge. Police pressed charges under the IPC of ‘rash driving’ and ‘endangering lives of others’ against the auto driver, besides provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheeler tempos, autorickshaws, animal-drawn vehicles, tractors, tractors with unladen trolleys and slow-moving vehicles are not allowed to use the MTHL.
Besides this on Tuesday, 14 challans were issued against motorists for halting their vehicles on the MTHL and blocking traffic. The Traffic Police’s Twitter handle also said that an FIR could be filed against people for obstructing traffic in this manner but no FIR has been lodged so far for this violation.
On Monday, four challans were issued against motorists for halting on MTHL, one for violating a no-entry, and the last for driving in the wrong direction. On the weekend, 120 motorists had faced action after they got off their vehicles, took photos and posed for selfies on the sea bridge.
Police then issued a warning through their Twitter handle that halting was not permitted on the bridge and strict action would be taken against them.
The speed limit on the sea bridge is 100 kmph for all vehicles, except on the entry/exit ramps where it is 40 kmph.
