End of Vistara flight cancellation crisis in sight? CEO says over 98% pilots have signed new contract

NEW DELHI: Allaying fears of worsening crisis, Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan on Saturday said the airline intends to stabilise operations for the remainder of April 2024 by this weekend and that over
98% of their pilots had signed a new pay contract.
“With reference to concerns being raised regarding the new pay structure of our pilots, we would like to clarify that over 98% of pilots have signed the new contract.Having said that, we are aware that some pilots have some concerns and queries regarding the contract,” the CEO said in a statement.
According to the statement, the airline said it has been contacting all passengers impacted by the cancellations and delays in order to provide appropriate reimbursements and compensation.
The airline also said it is hiring more pilots and adjusting operations to provide resilience and prevent future disruptions
“We acknowledge the inconvenience caused to our customers and sincerely apologise to them for the same. We are addressing this on a war footing. Hence, we are continuing to hire more pilots and are also carefully scaling back our operations slightly to provide the much-needed resilience, and a buffer in the rosters,” said the Vistara CEO.
“We are engaging with them to clarify and resolve the same,” he added, asserting that issue has not caused ‘any visible spike in attrition’ among pilots.
The statement also said that the in order to accommodate more customers wherever possible, the airline has deployed larger aircrafts like the B787-9 Dreamliner and A321neo aircraft, on a few domestic routes.
Vistara has issued an apology to the general public following the cancellation of a large number of flights during the last few days.
Vistara released a comment on their official X handle stating, “We acknowledge that the recent experience of our customers fell short of the standards that we hold ourselves to and we sincerely apologise for the same.”
After the announcement of the merger with Air India, a large number of Vistara pilots took sick leave in following the announcement of new salary guidelines. Pay reductions enacted following the recent implementation of new flying hours regulations were the root cause of the pilot shortage problem.
