NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert as Biparjoy
rapidly intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. Prime Minister also held a meeting to review the situation.
The IMD has said that the ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ was very likely to move north-northeast and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) by June 15 noon as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kilometres per hours (kmph) gusting to 150 kmph.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reviewed the situation related to Cyclone Biparjoy which is likely to hit the Kutch region of Gujarat on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by Union home minister Amit Shah, principal secretary to Prime Minister PK Mishra, cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, Earth Sciences secretary M Ravichandran, Kamal Kishore, Member National Disaster Management Authority, India, Meteorological Department director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, among others.
IMD issues orange alert in Gujarat
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat in view of the extremely severe cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” over the east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea.
The extremely severe cyclonic storm over east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea moved northwards with a speed of 7 kmph during past six hours and lay centered at 8 am on Monday about 320 km southwest of Porbandar, 360 km south-southwest of Devbhumi Dwarka, 440 km south of Jakhau Port, 440 km south-southwest of Naliya and 620 km south of Karachi (Pakistan).
Rescuers deployed at coastal regions
Disaster management personnel have been deployed in densely populated regions and cities that will fall in the storm’s path. The cyclone is likely to affect Karachi in Pakistan as well as two of India’s largest ports, Mundra and Kandla, in Gujarat.
Pakistan on high alert as Biparjoy likely to hit Sindh’s coastline
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Pakistan has put the authorities concerned on high alert. The cyclone is likely to affect Sindh’s coastal regions on Tuesday. According to the NDMA, the cyclone can cause strong winds, torrential rains and floods in coastal regions of the province. (ANI)
