Pushing for sustainable mobility, environmental campaign organisation Greenpeace and not-for-profit collective Council for Active Mobility have demanded 2000 kms of cycling lanes and footpaths exclusively for Bengaluru.
Cyclists, who TOI spoke to recently had expressed safety concerns, as lack of cycle lanes pushes them to the road, weaving in between motorised vehicles.
The two outfits demanded that Karnataka on the whole should have 4000 kms of footpaths and cycle lanes constructed. This was part of their 10-point agenda, which are recommendations for political parties’ election manifesto. This, as Karnataka goes into polling in less than a month.
The organisation demanded that the government make budgetary provision of Rs 40,000 crores for the establishment of dedicated cycle lanes, footpaths and Rs 12,750 crores for the procurement of electric bus fleet.
“Building more flyovers, roads and elevated corridors means we are encouraging more private vehicles, completely ignoring that the masses travel in buses and NMT (non-motorised transport). The more exclusionary we become, the less sustainable and livable our cities are. We need to focus on getting more buses, bus lanes, cycle infrastructure and disincentivize private transport without further delay. Our city is at stake here,” said Amruta S N, Greenpeace India Campaigner.
In consonance with the view, Ajay Nandakumar From the Council For Active Mobility, and believed that political parties need to make a commitment of allocating money and prioritise policies towards bus, cycling and walking in their manifesto.
Other Demands include :
