NEW DELHI: BJP on Thursday said Congress‘ decision to “boycott” the consecration ceremony at Ram Temple in Ayodhya showed the opposition party is carrying the legacy of Jawahar Lal Nehru, who had boycotted the inauguration of renovated Somnath Temple and it doesn’t represent the values of Mahatma Gandhi who had dreamt of “Ram Rajya” and used to chant “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram”.
“This is Nehru’s Congress, not Gandhi’s Congress. Mahatma Gandhi used to sing ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ and now Congress is not attending the ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony. This shows Congress is against Hindu religion and Hindutva,” BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said at a press conference, a day after Congress “respectfully declined” the invitation to attend the Ayodhya ceremony on January 22.
Noting that the then PM Nehru was opposed to the association of then President Rajendra Prasad and some leaders of Congress with the rebuilding and inauguration of the Somnath temple, Trivedi claimed Congress has disowned the ‘Ram Rajya’ concept of Mahatma Gandhi.
He said, “Its government under Indira Gandhi had fired upon saints protesting against cow-slaughter and when Sonia Gandhi was Congress president, the party had described Lord Ram as an imaginary figure.”
Claiming that Congress decision had exposed the party’s inherent opposition to India’s culture and Hindu religion, Trivedi said due to its feelings of “jealousy, malice & inferiority complex” towards PM Modi, Congress had gone to the extent of opposing the country and is now opposing God.
“Ram Temple symbolises the highest values of Indian tradition but for Congress and other parties with a similar mindset, politics of extremism and appeasement is more important,” he said.
