Congress: How Nagaland became turf of BJP-Congress war for 2024 Lok Sabha election | India News

NEW DELHI: The upcoming Nagland assembly election has, wittingly or unwittingly, become the hotbed of war between the BJP and the Congress for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. During campaigning in the northeastern state, while the BJP claimed decimation of the Congress, the latter has predicted that an alliance government led by it would win the 2024 Lok Sabha election and form government at the Centre.
Nagaland and Meghalaya will vote on February 27. Senior BJP leader and Union home minister Amit Shah addressed election rallies in Nagaland on February 20 and February 21.
Congress president and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge too held an election rally in the state on February 21.

Speaking at an election meeting in Mon Town, Nagaland on February 20, Shah said the Congress would not be visible after the 2024 election. He was responding to the derogatory remarks made by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While talking to media persons on February 20, Khera mocked the PM saying, “Why the government is running away from discussion (on forming a JPC on Gautam Adani-Hindenburg issue) in Parliament… why it’s scared of constituting a JPC when former PMs Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee could form a JPC… so Narendra Gautamdas sorry Narendra Damodardas Modi ko kya problem hai… naam bhale hi Damodardas hai par kaam Gautamdas hai….”
Modi writes his full name as Narendra Damodardas Modi, where the middle name, Damodardas, stands for his father’s name. It is a common tradition in several parts of the country including Gujarat, where Modi comes from, to use father’s name as the middle name.
Khera replaced Damodar with Gautam (the first name of business tycoon Adani) and allegedly ridiculed the PM saying the name is Damodardas but the deeds are of Gautamdas.
Without naming Khera or what exactly he commented, the minister said: “The kind of language the Congress spokesperson has used (for PM) and the sort of reaction it has drawn from people from across the country… you will see Rahul Gandhi that Congress will not be visible even through telescope after the polls in 2024. People will respond through the ballot box.”
Shah said the PM is revered throughout the world for having brought happiness to the lives of the country’s 80 crore poor. “For such a beloved PM of ours, the kind of language which has been used is something I strongly condemn… It is a matter of concern for me and everyone concerned that the standard of Congress functionaries is falling by the day since Rahul Gandhi became the party leader,” he said.
He said, “We cannot use that kind of words for them but we can certainly vote against such behaviour. So I request you all to vote for the NDA alliance as a protest to this behaviour.”
Mallikarjun Kharge in Nagaland
A day after Shah retaliated to Khera’s remarks, the Congress president reached the state for campaigning. Speaking in a rally at Diphupar Village Public Ground, he attacked Modi.
Kharge said, “You know Modi has said this several times that ‘I am the only man who can face the country and no other people can touch me’. That proudly he says. No democratic man says like this. You are in a democracy. You should remember. You are not an autocrat. You are not a dictator. You are elected by people and the people will teach you (a) lesson in 2024.”
The leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha talked about the opposition unity and how the Congress would lead the opposition alliance. “(The) alliance government will come in (at the) Centre. Congress will lead. We are talking with other parties because otherwise the democracy and constitution will go. Therefore, with every party now and then we are calling, we are talking, we are sharing our views (on) how to win 2024,” he said.
Kharge reiterated that the BJP would lose and the Congress-led opposition alliance would win a majority. “Therefore, the BJP will not get (a) majority. Some people say they will not get (the) majority. All other parties together, of course Congress will lead, we will get the majority. We will follow the Constitution. We will follow democracy. Let 100 Modis and Shahs come. This is India. Our Constitution is very strong,” he added.
The Congress president was indirectly also referring to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s comments on opposition unity. Recently, the latter exhorted the Congress to take a lead in forging unity among the opposition parties to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Be it Shah or Kharge, both talked about the 2024 general election while campaigning for the Nagaland assembly election.
