Congress betrayed TN on Katchatheevu: AllyVaiko | India News

CHENNAI: MDMK founder and DMK ally Vaiko caused a flutter on Wednesday by accusing Congress of having “betrayed Tamil Nadu on every front” while ceding the Katchatheevu islet off the Rameswaram coast to Sri Lanka in 1974.
If Vaiko’s salvo at Congress seemed to echo what PM Narendra Modi said two days earlier, he was just as unsparing in his criticism of the latter.
Speaking to a news agency in Chennai on the sidelines of his election campaign in South Chennai constituency for DMK candidate Thamizhachi Thangapandian, the 79-year-old accused Modi of being “a traitor”.
He said that while Congress allegedly bartered TN’s interests many years ago, Modi “betrayed Tamil Nadu, betrayed India, betrayed Sri Lanka”.
Vaiko is known to have been a supporter of LTTE and a critic of Congress for decades over the decision to send the Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka.
He sharpened his attack on Congress during the final phase of the war between LTTE and Sri Lankan armed forces in 2009, alleging human rights violations by the island nation’s army. He became less critical of the party after MDMK aligned with DMK, which leads an alliance in which Congress is a partner.
MDMK is part of the INDIA bloc in TN and Vaiko’s son Durai Vaiko is contesting the Trichy Lok Sabha seat as its candidate.
