ALIPURDUAR: Bengal would have reaped the benefits of more welfare projects had the Centre been fair with funding for schemes like NREGS, CM Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday ahead of a visit to Delhi next week to make a pitch for increased allocations.
“The Centre owes Bengal Rs 1.15 lakh crore. Imagine the kind of development we could have done had they released the money,” Mamata, who has sought a meeting with the PM, said at a rally in Alipurduar.”In fact, there are several centrally sponsored schemes that we continued funding after the Centre stopped releasing money. Either they pay the dues now or the government needs to be changed,” she added.
The CM has sought an appointment with PM Narendra Modi between December 18 and 20. “Some of our MPs will accompany me to the meeting. We will demand the amount the Centre owes the state.” Mamata announced 70 projects worth Rs 90 crore.
She also said the state government will provide land pattas to tea garden workers and Rs 1.2 lakh each to build concrete houses. “We are not like the BJP, who believe in making empty promises. They had promised Rs 15 lakh in each account, but nothing has come,” she said.
