MUMBAI: In a case of collusive corruption, the CBI on Monday arrested both the bribe taker and the bribe giver.
CBI arrested Satish Jha, accounts officer (stores section) of the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Navy), while accepting Rs 3.5 lakh bribe from a contractor Annamalaisamy Arunachalam and his employee for clearing his pending bill. The court remanded the trio in CBI custody.
The CBI suspects that Jha had collected bribes from the contractor in the past too. The CBI registered the case on receiving specific information that they were involved in corrupt practices. In the FIR, the CBI said Jha “indulged in corrupt and illegal activities in connivance with certain private suppliers and was regularly taking bribes for favourably processing payment of the bills of those suppliers.” Jha stays at Navi Mumbai and has his office is at Colaba. After office hours, on Monday he collected the bribe money and was supposed to travel home by train. The CBI officials, who were monitoring his activities since the last few days, arrested him and recovered the bribe money. According to the FIR, on February 23, Annamalaisamy requested Jha to pass the bills of his company and the bribe money for his service will be delivered after clearance of the bill. Jha agreed to pass the bills as soon as those were put up before him. On February 28 Annamalaisamy enquired with Jha about the status of his bills. Jha informed the bills have not come to him. But he promised to clear the same, CBI said On March 6, Annamalaisamy’s employee, Shailendra, called Jha for a meeting. CBI laid a trap and caught them.
