RAJKOT: A lion and a lioness — a mating pair — died by drowning after they fell into an open well at Kotda village of Khambha taluka in Amreli district of Gujarat’s Amerli district on Thursday night. The place where the incident happened falls under the Tulsishyam range of Gir (East) forest division.
According to forest officials, it was accidental deaths. A farmer found that the lioness had drowned in the well and the lion was struggling to save its life. He immediately informed the forest department and a team of forest officials reached the site within 12 minutes but by that time the lion too had died by drowning. Chief conservator of forest (wildlife) Aradhana Sahu said, “We found pug marks near the well. They both were running, but it is not clear whether they were chasing prey or running behind each other. ” Both the lion and lioness were in the age of five-tonine years, Sahu added. On Saturday, one lion had fallen into a well in the Dalkhaniya range but soon a team reached there and rescued the animal. Then the animal was shifted to Ambardi safari park for treatment.
