Bommai: BSY in BJP’s Karnataka campaign panel, Bommai to lead team | India News

NEW DELHI: Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai will lead BJP’s 25-member campaign committee for the state polls, in what is seen as the party high command reposing confidence in his leadership since he took over as CM in July 2021, replacing party veteran BS Yediyurappa. Assembly elections in Karnataka are slated to be held in the next few weeks.
BJP president JP Nadda on Friday constituted the Bommai-led committee that will have Yediyurappa and other leaders as members.
Rajya Sabha MP and BJP general secretary (in-charge, Karnataka), Arun Singh said that Bommai is a an experienced leader with an image of common man chief minister, which will help the party win the state polls again. “All sections of the society have been given representation in the two committees. Under the guidance of PM Modi and senior party leader BS Yeddyurappa, the party is going to win with a comprehensive majority under the leadership of Bommai,” Singh told TOI.
Even as the party brass has been banking on Yediyurappa’s appeal amongst the voters, especially the Lingayat community, the appointment of Bommai as head of the campaign committee makes it clear that BJP will go to the polls projecting the incumbent CM as the party’s mascot, other than the appeal of PM Narendra Modi, with “double engine” growth as sole theme.
Other than Yediyurappa, state president Nalil Kumar Kateel, former chief ministers DV Sadanand Gowda, Jagdish Shettar, Union ministers Pralhad Joshi, Shobha Karandlaje and A Narayanaswamy, party’s national general secretary CT Ravi have been selected as committee members. The party leadership has also included Yediyurappa’s younger son and state BJP vice president BS Vijayendra in the panel, acknowledging his importance as one of the key strategists in party affairs. Karandlaje has been appointed convener of the election management committee.
The party has tried to strike a balance between two dominant castes by appointing Bommai, a Lingayat, as head of one committee, and Karandlaje, a Vokkaliga, as convener of another panel.
The appointment of Bommai as chairman of the campaign committee happened on a day in which independent Lok Sabha MP from Mandya, Sumanlatha Ambareesh, announced support to BJP in the assembly polls.
