KOLKATA: Six vice-chancellors of Bengal universities appointed on an ad hoc basis tendered their resignations Tuesday to governor CV Ananda Bose in the presence of state education minister Bratya Basu after a two-hour meeting at Raj Bhavan.
“Six vice-chancellors submitted resignation letters to the governor, some others will submit it tomorrow, while the rest will follow suit in phases,” Basu said.
Governor Bose gave the six VCs a three-month extension before the state universities resume the old procedure of appointing vice-chancellors through search committees formed under the University Act. The state education minister assured Bose, who is also the chancellor of state universities, of starting the process of setting up search committees.
The joint press meet on Tuesday marked a departure from the era of former education minister Partha Chatterjee, when VC appointments had become a point of conflict between Raj Bhavan and the state government. The state framed the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Act 2017 and the West Bengal Universities Rules 2019, by which the state government, and not the chancellor, appointed temporary VCs bypassing the search committee.
