An avalanche at Laukhung Nala in Darma Valley of Uttarakhand’s Dharchula Tehsil on Sunday blocked the road leading to the China border, cutting off seven villages and several security posts from the rest of the country. Locals said several tourists were trapped in the affected areas, reports Prem Punetha.
“Seven persons, including me, were en route to our village when the avalanche happened, blocking a 50 m stretch of the road between Baling and Dantu villages. We managed to escape to safety,” Govind Singh, a resident of Dantu village, said.
Salu Datal, another resident of Dantu village, said that the avalanche has isolated the villages of Song, Dugtu, Dhakar, Go, Tidang, Sopu, and Marcha, along with some security posts in the lower valleys.
“Several tourists visiting the Panchachuli base camp found themselves trapped in the affected villages. These villages are typically seasonal, with most inhabitants residing in lower valleys and returning to these villages when the weather is not extreme,” Datal said.
Dharchula SDM Dinesh Shasni said the road is under Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and the agency has been given instructions to clear the blockade. “Clearance work will commence once the weather conditions become favourable,” said CPWD assistant engineer Anil Singh Bangyal.
