LUCKNOW: Terror suspect Saddam Sheikh, who was arrested in Lucknow on July 2, was planning to use a truck to carry out an attack taking a cue from similar attacks in France and Germany in the past, officials of the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said.
“Saddam is a lone wolf who is highly radicalised and was preparing himself psychologically for the attack. He was planning to use his vehicle as a lethal weapon. Saddam is in ATS remand,” additional director general (ATS) Naveen Arora said. “He was inspired by the module and used to watch videos of terror attacks involving ‘trucks’ on a daily basis,” the ADG said, adding that though his target was not yet clear, Saddam was planning to attack a crowded area.
Saddam allegedly told interrogators that he was influenced by terrorists like Osama bin Laden, Zakir Musa, Riyaz Naikoo, Naved Jatt, and Sameer Tiger. Photographs and videos of these terrorists were also recovered from his mobile phone. “We have sent the mobile phone of the accused for forensic analysis,” ADG Arora said.
“Saddam is a native of Gonda and worked as a driver in a company in Bengaluru,” ADG Arora said. “During social media monitoring and electronic surveillance, it surfaced that Saddam Sheikh was self-radicalised and also kept in touch with militants in Pakistan through an app, which is a proprietary audio/video calling and instant messaging software service,” he added.
“In France, a 19-tonne cargo truck was driven into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in July 2016. The attack resulted in 86 deaths” an ATS official said.
