NEW DELHI: Underlining that he has been raising the issue of “hum do hamare do” for a few years, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said PM Narendra Modi will try his best to stall a discussion on the Adani controversy, but the country should know who are the forces propping up the industrialist.
Rahul told reporters, “Modi ji will do his best to avert a discussion on Adani ji in Parliament. There is a reason for it and you know that. I want that there should be a discussion on Adani issue and the truth should come out. The lakhs and crores of corruption that has taken place should come out. The country should know what is the power behind Adani.”
He added, “The government does not want, and is scared of a discussion in Parliament on Adani ji. The government should allow a discussion in Parliament.”
Congress asked its second set of three questions to PM Modi, focussing on how could LIC make heavy investments in the Adani companies, when private fund managers have steered clear of the group.
AICC spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, “Is it not the duty of the government to ensure that vital public sector financial institutions are more conservative in their investments than their private sector counterparts.”
Claiming that there have been four fraud investigations against the Adani companies, including one by SEBI for the identity of its offshore investors, Ramesh said the PM should clarify if any questions were raised by the PMO or the finance ministry or LIC on the “questionable” investments of LIC money. “Or, was this another case of your ‘Mann Ki Banking’ to benefit your cronies,” he mocked, adding, “Will you share the true extent of LIC’s losses from its Adani investments after January 24.”
Congress said the PM cannot maintain silence on the issue by pretending “Hum Adani Ke Hain Kaun” (who I am for Adani) .
After Parliament was washed out for yet another day, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh criticised the decision of the Rajya Sabha chairman to reject the adjournment notices of opposition members, arguing that the provision is meant for such situations and that UPA had accepted adjournment notices on many occasions.
On Monday, Congress scaled up its stir on the issue, with state units holding demonstrations in every district, especially outside LIC and SBI offices, and Youth Congress took out a march in Delhi.
