President Droupadi Murmu appointed AAP MLAs Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj ministers in the Delhi cabinet Tuesday. They are expected to be sworn in on Thursday. CM Arvind Kejriwal had forwarded their names after the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain.
AAP spokesperson and DJB vice-chairman Bharadwaj is a three-term MLA who served as transport and environment minister in Kejriwal’s first government in 2013-14. Atishi, elected as MLA for the first time in 2020, has worked with Sisodia on the city’s education system.

The names of Atishi and Bharadwaj were forwarded by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal following the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, which have been accepted by Murmu.
Sisodia, who was handling 18 of the 33 departments in Delhi government, was arrested last month by CBI over alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Delhi excise policy. Jain, who is also lodged in Tihar jail, was arrested by ED in May last year in connection with a money laundering case.
Till Atishi and Bhardwaj are sworn in, ministers Raaj Kumar Anand and Kailash Gahlot will handle portfolios that fell vacant following Sisodia’s resignation. Gahlot is looking after finance, PWD and power, among others. Anand, who was handling the social welfare department, is looking after education and health.
Bharadwaj is a three-term MLA who also served as transport and environment minister in Kejriwal’s first government of 49 days in 2013-14. Apart from being AAP’s chief spokesperson, he is currently entrusted with the responsibility of cleaning the Yamuna and taking piped water to every household in his capacity as Delhi Jal Board vice-chairman.

Atishi, who was elected to Delhi assembly for the first time in 2020, has worked closely with Sisodia on improving the city’s schools and education system. She is also among the most vocal leaders of AAP.
This is the second time that a cabinet rejig has been necessitated in the AAP government’s current term. In October last year, Rajendra Pal Gautam was replaced with Raaj Kumar Anand after the former resigned following a row around his presence at a religious conversion event.
